What You Need Before Installation
Before the engineer arrives, ensure the following are in place or accessible:
- Under-sink space: The tank unit typically requires 300-400mm of clear height and 200-300mm of width under the sink
- Cold mains supply: A 15mm copper or plastic cold water supply pipe accessible under the sink
- Electrical supply: A 13A switched fused spur within reach of the tank unit (usually within 1 metre). This should be installed by a qualified electrician before the plumber arrives if not already present
- Tap hole in the sink: Most installations use the spare tap hole in the sink (typically the one used for a separate mixer spray). If no spare hole exists, one can be drilled in the sink or worktop
- Drain access: The pressure relief valve on the tank needs a drain connection — usually to the sink waste pipe
The Installation Process
- Fit the tap: The tap head is fitted into the sink or worktop tap hole. Most boiling taps use the same 35mm hole as a standard tap
- Position the tank: The under-sink tank is positioned and the supply hoses are connected from the tank to the tap head
- Connect to cold mains: The engineer connects the tank inlet to the cold mains supply via a new isolation valve
- Fit the filter: The inline filter is connected on the inlet side of the tank
- Connect to drain: A drain pipe is fitted from the pressure relief valve outlet to the sink waste
- Electrical connection: The tank is plugged into the fused spur or hard-wired depending on the model
- Commissioning: The engineer powers up the system, checks for leaks, allows the tank to heat and tests all functions
Installation Costs
| Element | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Plumber (labour only, supply only installation) | £150 – £250 |
| Electrician for new fused spur (if needed) | £80 – £150 |
| New isolation valves and fittings | £20 – £40 |
| Tap hole drilling (if required) | £50 – £100 |
For supply and fit (where the engineer also supplies the tap and tank), add the tap cost (typically £400-£2,000+ depending on brand and model).
How Long Does Installation Take?
A straightforward installation where all utilities are accessible and an electrical spur is already in place typically takes 2-3 hours. More complex installations (new spur required, difficult under-sink access, quartz sink requiring professional drilling) can take 4-6 hours spread across two trades.
Common Questions
Can I install a boiling tap myself?
The plumbing element can be done by a competent DIYer — it involves standard push-fit or compression fittings. However, the electrical connection must be done by a qualified electrician under UK wiring regulations. We recommend professional installation to protect your warranty.
Do I need building regulations approval?
Installing a new electrical circuit (for the fused spur) in a kitchen requires Part P notification to building control in England and Wales. Most electricians handle this as part of their service.
Will installation damage my worktop?
Only if a new tap hole needs to be drilled. A skilled installer can drill granite, quartz and composite worktops without damage using the correct diamond core drill. Stone worktop drilling should only be done by someone with experience — mistakes can crack the worktop.
